Meet MAT 3D Painting Contest : And The Winners Are…

Sebastien Deguy on June 1 2017 | News, Substance Painter

The winners of the Meet MAT 3D Painting contest are finally here! Overwhelmed by the number and quality of entries, we have slightly changed the rules: 20 winners instead of 3 in the general category, and 10 winners instead of 1 in the student category.

Before we get to the winners, a quick word from Allegorithmic CEO Sébastien Deguy:

This contest was by far our most successful to date: more than 1,200 entries, from all over the planet, and at a quality level that was such that we had to rethink our rules and offer more gifts to participants... this has been a shock to all here at Allegorithmic!

So I just want to congratulate you all who participated, thank you all too for such passion and involvement. I want to warmly thank the jury too, for such an amazing experience.

Now is time to announce the winners, and boy how hard it has been to eliminate some of the entries. But here are the winners :)

There are lots of little details in there which tell a story. Hope you'll find them all. :) “

14th - Ernesto Ordoñez with “MATCHOL”

Monterrey, Mexico

“Based on the beaded art of the Wixáritari or Huicholes, Native Mexicans of the west side of the country.

Traditionally depicts symbols of their deities the trinity of Corn, Blue Deer and Peyote, and the Eagle. But this time I chose to mix the colors and logo of the greatest tool for texturing authoring.

It's known that huicholes that make this type of art get blind at an early age, each bead is no bigger than few millimeters.

P.S. I ended up painting each bead by hand T_T”

The Jury

We would like to thank the jury for taking up the incredibly difficult task of ranking their favorites! Here are some of their testimonials:

Blair Armitage, 3D Character Artist for the gaming industry

I was amazed by the consistent quality and diversity of the entries, many of which took advantage of the wide range of Substance's material possibilities in clever ways. The student category was particularly impressive, with some MATs definitely reaching a professional level. I really enjoyed looking through the entries, though ranking them was difficult!

Panos Ioannou, Head of Production and Visualisation, Foster + Partners - Architecture

Firstly, this was not an easy contest to judge. There is a huge amount of talent coming through from the student entries and an immense amount of creativity and imagination. This was comforting to see, as such talent bodes very well for the future. The professional submitted works were of such a high standard making it incredibly difficult to single out the winners. These facts have made me feel very honored to be invited to judge for this year's Allegorithmic contest.

Adam Watkins, VFX Supervisor, Visual Effects Society Award winner

Judging the competition was great fun! I was blown away by the variety and creativity of the entries, and the photo-real level of quality people were hitting. I also enjoyed so many of the artists sharing their workflow and process on the forum - thank you so much for letting us peek into your workrooms!

Florian Flatau, Lead Transportation Designer, Art-Toy Creator and multidisciplinary Artist

Overall quality, execution, content, and amount of participants have been very impressive. Everybody who put energy into this, contributed and tried Substance Painter - has won!
