Get Ready for Substance Day Asia!

A year after hosting our very first community events in Tokyo and Seoul, we are kicking it off again, adding Shanghai to the list! As usual, there will be many conferences and workshops with local and international Substance experts including Xhelong Zu, Joshua Lynch, Hyun suk Jin, Glauco Longhi and Gilles Fleury.

Of course, Allegorithmic CEO Sébastien Deguy will present a keynote at each event, showing what we have in stall for the Substance community in the coming months.

10:30 - 11:30 AM – Substance: What’s New in Substance and Chinese-Style PBR Material Creation
Meizi Yan, Technical Artist and Community Manager, Allegorithmic

Follow this session with Allegorithmic Technical Artist and Community Manager Meizi Yan to learn about what's new and what's upcoming in the world of Substance.

Next, let Meizi give you an in-depth look into using Substance to make Chinese-style PBR Procedural materials. The presentation will conclude with a question-and-answer session.

12:40 - 3:00 PM – Making Substance Painter Magic
Zhelong Xu, 3D Digital Artisan

Follow this session with Substance artist Zhelong Xu to learn the pipeline for creating realistic textures and materials for independently 3D artworks.

In Part One, Zhelong will give his insights into real-world materials and how to apply them to process of making realistic materials in Substance Painter. Live demonstrations will start from real-life references, material analysis and production of 3D objects.

In Part Two, Zhelong will explain in detail the texture material creation process of “Di Qing”. Based on the theory of the presentation in Part One, he will show from the rough matching of materials and colors in Substance Painter, then step-by-step in-depth adjustment, then complete the final rendering.

This presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

3:30 - 3:50 PM – Book signing by Zhelong Xu

Substance Day Shanghai will see the official release of Allegorithmic's art book Yechawood: The Art of Zhelong Xu. Zhelong will be on hand to sign copies of this limited Chinese edition of the book.

4:00 - 6:00 PM – The Substance of For Honor
Gilles Fleury, Senior Technical Art Director, Ubisoft Shanghai

During this workshop, Gilles will show you how to use Substance Designer and Substance Painter to create architecture-themed tileable textures in AAA games.

He will also demonstrate how he used Substance Painter to save time while creating content for character variations in For Honor.

This presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

In Part One, learn how to paint realistic creatures with Substance Painter. This master class tells you how to approach a realistic creature's painting.

In Part Two, create unique and extravagant results using traditional art and airbrush concepts.

15:15 - 18.15 PM – Substance Designer Master Class
Joshua Lynch, Senior Environment Artist, Red Storm Entertainment

In this masterclass, we will create a realistic roofing material with Substance Designer. Joshua will also show you how to organize graphs using subgraphs and published parameters, keep them efficient, and how to control noise to read materials more comfortably and usefully.

Finally, he will introduce tips that avoid a procedural look and gets organic and realistic results.

In this master class, we introduce the technology and workflow to creating realistic roof materials with the help of Substance Designer. Select reference pictures first, plan your production and create realistic PBR results using the powerful Substance Designer workflow. Joshua will also share tips on how to produce realistic results, and how to manage assets.

4:15 - 7:00 PM – Substance Painter Masterclass
Hyunseok Jin, Lead Character artist, Action Square

All materials have their own unique characteristics such as color, shape, texture and reflection. Before presenting them realistically, we will walk through the parts to think about and use Substance Painter to demonstrate the effective use of each material representation.

Skin, Fabric, Metal, Leather, Dust, etc. this master class will especially focus on the expression of fabric materials.
